[Bible in Greek], ed. Gerhard von Mastricht. H KAINH ΔIAΘHKH. Novum Testamentum... Amsterdam: Ex Officina Wetsteniana, 1711.

Small octavo (5 11/16" x 3 11/16", 148mm x 94mm). Title-page printed in red and black. Engraved frontispiece, 2 folding engraved plates of the City and Temple of Jerusalem by John Lightfoot, and a folding engraved map of the Holy Land.

Bound in contemporary black morocco. On the boards, a double gilt fillet border surrounding four hatched pyramids composed of six smaller pyramids stacked. On the spine, five raised bands with a gilt roll. In the panels, gilt quadriform motifs. Gilt roll to the edges of the boards, continuing onto the inside dentelle. Gilt-and-green embossed paisley end-papers. All edges of the text-block gilt.

Some scuffing to the extremities. A little marginal toning to the text-block, but altogether a lovely copy. Early  ink ownership inscription of John Rowntreee, rector of Elton (Co. Durham) on the title-page. Bookplate of Joseph Frank (with a Phrygian or revolutionary cap) on the front paste-down. Ink ownership inscription of Britt Engvall (1956) on the front paste-down.


Edited by Gerhard von Mastricht ("G.D.T.M.D" i.e., Gerhardus de Trajecto Mosae Doctor) and based on the editions of Etienne de Corcelles and particularly of John Fell (1625-1686), bishop of Oxford, of 1675. This is the second New Testament to be published by Heinrich Wetstein, his first appearing in 1698 edited by Johann Leusden.  From the library Joseph Frank, nephew and adopted son and heir, and literary executor of Joseph Ritson (1752-1803) local county Durham radical. His bookplate reads "Libero i nacqui e vissi e morro sciolto" - "I was born free, I will live and die free" (a quotation from Canto V of Tasso's "Gerusalemme Liberata").
